DJ Brian Carpenter, frontman and mastermind of The Beat Circus, has hosted Free Association every Wednesday night on WZBC for the last four years in WZBC’s fabled “No Commercial Potential” time slot. Free Association is a dub/trance/carnival music show which juxtaposes a David Lynchian backdrop of noise and drone with new music and all manner of blips, starts, stops, and pitch-controlled bits of barely recognizable pieces of pop culture ranging from Burt Bacharach to The Del Vikings. Free Association has also been host to a pantheon of special guest appearances including The Dresden Dolls, Tom Tom Club, accordionist Alec K Redfearn, saxophonist John Tchicai, and guitarists Marc Ribot and Joe Morris.
